So tell me what you want, what you really really want

Isn’t it funny how the things we want change every single day?

I mean, yes, we have overall goals or places we want to get to in the big picture, but in our day-to-day lives, our wants are constantly changing. The thing you wanted yesterday could be old news by tomorrow afternoon. And the place you wanted to go a month ago could take a back seat to the amazing place you want to visit now.

Part of this non-stop change is the age we grew up in. Our lives, since we were little, were changing every day as new technology emerged. Things that used to take forever to do are now done in moments, whether on a laptop or a cell phone or whatever the next hot item is. We enjoy instant gratification and are always looking for the next trend, the next adventure.

I think the other part of this non-stop change, though, is just a part of life and the unknown. One of my favorite phrases is “you don’t know what you don’t know”. There is this giant, amazing world out there (as well as a scary, dangerous one), and there’s no way you know everything. There’s not even a possibility that you know a tiny sliver of everything. You can’t judge what you don’t know; you can’t hate on what you don’t understand.

But you do have to realize that there is more to the world than the little corner you live in. And it’s 100% okay to change your mind on the things you want based on the knowledge you learn. People change their minds constantly – it’s not because they’re unstable, it’s because they’re learning. And growing. And rearranging their priorities. And this never stops, whether you’re 22 or 82. Every day is a chance to learn something new, something you didn’t know, and to challenge yourself into wanting something more.

Always keep learning – the more you learn, the more you’ll want. And you should like what you like, and want what you want, and not let anyone tell you otherwise. Keep growing, keep wanting, and never, ever stop changing your mind.
